About The Project

Medicine is both an art and a science. While clinical science diagnoses a pathological condition, it is human connection, art, and storytelling that illuminate how illness, environment, and resilience shape our lives.

The Humans of Oklahoma Project was founded to bridge the gap between clinical care and the deeply human experience of healthcare within our local communities. Through a combination of direct patient support and storytelling, our initiative documents and supports the full arc of vulnerability, wisdom, and care across generations of Oklahomans.

Our work is built upon three core pillars:

• Pediatric Patient Support: Direct, hands-on engagement with pediatric patients at institutions like Bethany Children's Health Center. Through 1-on-1 academic tutoring, interactive book reading, and creative adaptive art sessions, student volunteers work to preserve a child's identity as a student and provide comfort during medical disruptions.
• Oklahoma Caregivers: 1-to-2-minute reflective video interviews with frontline medical staff, capturing their personal journeys, what called them to medicine, and how they navigate empathy in high-stakes environments.
• Oklahoma Elders: Short video histories and biographies capturing the life lessons, resilience, and enduring wisdom of senior residents in our local communities, ensuring their legacies are honored and preserved.

Taken together, this combination of active service and preserved stories offers aspiring clinicians and the public an enriched understanding of the dynamic relationships between medicine, human suffering, and the social fabric of Oklahoma.
